WINTON - IPRA Vic Round 7 - 15th November 2008

WINTON - 15th Nov 11am Saturday Morning - this man is the outright IPRA Vic championship leader for 2008
Looks a little stressed and concerned doesn't he............

Winton Round 7 2008 Race Report

Practice

A relatively un-eventful practice Saturday morning with Wayne Always on fire (literally!). Neil Crowe was complaining of tyres losing grip, but flatly refused to purchase anymore. A couple of new faces were seen, and seemed to be coming to terms with the track. They were Paul Rowe, in the Corolla, and Simon Gillet, in the WRX.

Qualifying

Prior to qualifying, (as pictured on the website), Neil Crowe was obviously suffering high anxiety due to the constant pressure of the Vereker brothers during practice. But went out and posted his fastest time on his first flying lap. Kane took poll with a 1.35.69. Daniel came second with a 1.35.85. And amazingly Neil Crowe, awake, bad tyres, big smile qualified third with a 1.37.63. Ross Tomiano in LMA qualified with a 1.39.39. Sam Walpole second, with a 1.40.88. Wayne Twist third, with a 1.41.50. Wayne was given the meatball flag after 4 laps of qualifying for dropping oil on the circuit. At this stage it is unknown if Wayne will still compete this weekend. This opens up the LMA championship.

Race one

With Wayne Twist sorting his engine oil issues the Vereker boys continued on their merry way. With Daniel Winning and Kane a close second. Neil Crow finishing in third position, John Zourkas in fourth. Ross Tomaino finished 1st in late model class A. Followed by a very relieved (No Oil Issue)Cordia of Wayne Twist, Third Sam Walpole in the Evo. Of the Clubs newest competitors, Paul Rowe finished 14th with Simon Gillett a DNF.

Race Two

Kane Vereker won over Daniel for first place bringing the point gap back to 6 for 2nd and 3rd place in the outright championship.  Neil Crow finished 3rd 28 seconds later with John Zourkas in 4th right behind him. In 5th Place and 1st in late model class A was Ross Tomiano followed by Sam Wolpole both in EVOs with Wayne Twist’s older Cordia in LMA 3rd outright 7th position. A great performance from Simon Gillett in the “Amy Gillett Foundation” WRX coming in ninth from last position. The Sunday only entrant James Atkinson was a DNF due to Oil Surge issues with the new 6Ltr engine.

Race Three

Daneil Vereker took the points for First followed by Kane then JohnZourkas with Wayne Alway taking 4th place. Dramas for Neil Crow in the VH Commodore occurred when the third gear decided to cease functioning. No Tyres, No Grip, No third gear, pretty much no hope Neil retired back to his swag with a smile on his face. The outright IPRA VIC state Championship for 2008 was his. 1st for LMA was Ross Tomiano followed by the much improved WRX of Simon Gillett, followed by Sam Wolpole, James Atkinson’s V8 commodore then Wayne Twist in the Cordia. This result gave Wayne Twist 1st place in the LMA class championship with 2nd and 3rd still to be decided between the EVOs of Sam Walpole and Ross Tomiano respectively. A clean sweep for Mitsubishi in Late Model class A.

Race Four

With the points standing as they were Kane Veriker needed a 1st place and Daniel needed 4th or worse in order for 2nd and 3rd positions in the outright championship to change. Drama was to unfold with Kane suffering mechanical malfunction (from the horse’s mouth “Brake Failure”) to cause him a DNF, this sealed 2nd outright however 3rd at this stage is unclear. John Zourkas finished with a very consistent 2nd place and a great result for Wayne Alway in the Yellow RX7 in 3rd. The LMA championship took a twist with Ross Tomiano in first place overtaking Sam Walpole for 2nd in the class. James Atkinson 2nd in his class with a fantastic drive from Simon Gillett posting him in 3rd place. Sam Walpole had a minor on track confrontation leaving him in second last position due to a spin.

In Conclusion

A great weekend of racing closed off the 2008 season, a fantastic effort by Neil Crow in his first full season winning the Outright  IPRA Vic State Championship for 2008. Congratulations to Wayne Twist for 1st in the Late Model Class A, Ross Tomiano 2nd with Sam Walpole in 3rd. Special mention to Paul Rowe and Simon Gillett in their first weekend of competition with IPRA Vic.  Not to mention the paddock of RX7s that were competing (Kane, Dan, Wayne, John & Brydan) “Great Job Guys”. With the Nationals the week before and Island Magic this coming weekend and field of 17 cars was fantastic to see, this included only one E30 BMW that of Geoff Bowls.

Phillip Island Rundown - By Paul Rule

The 2008 VSCRC is all over and was won by Neil Crowe in the Commodore.
Phillip Island Saturday was hot with the track being greasy and a bit slow or so they tell me.
Dan Vereker was on pole with brother Kane 2nd. Neil Crowe was a consistent 3rd. Bill Schoots in 4th after not racing at the Island in 4 years. Newcomer Wayne Alway in 5th in the RX7 in his first outing.

Race 1 was won by Kane with Neil Crowe 2nd. Daniel was 3rd, John Zourkas 4th and Bill Schoots 5th. A few of the NSW visitors were coming to terms with the track with Peter Foote running 8th on his first outing.
Richard Gartner in the rapid Mitsubishi Mirage 11th. It was a huge field with quality cars.
The new VT Commodores of Jason Jarvis and James Atkinson looking fantastic.

Race 2. Bill Schoots fixed the misfire, extracted the digit and pulled a well deserved win out of the bag. Worked his way through to the lead, pulled a bit of a gap and stayed there.
Kane & Daniel 2nd & 3rd, Crowie 4th, Zourkas 5th. Richard Gartner 10th and getting the under 1600 lap record in the process.
Mario started from the back of the grid after fixing his diff but the RX7 wouldn't rev over 8000rpm.
Just though I'd let you know, neither will my V8 so no sympathy there.

Race 3. Bill, Bill, Bill ! What happened? Puts all this pressure on himself and spins off at southern loop even though he set fastest lap. Kane "The Intimidator" ended up winning from a very quick and well performing John Zourkas. Dan came 3rd.  Crowie 4th again, consolidating points good points for the championship. Bill back to 5th. Peter Foote from NSW came 6th and vowed to come back to have another crack at it in future.
All in all, a big quality field and some great racing. A great effort by Kane Vereker winning the round. One round to go at Winton then Roll on Island Magic !

How Good is your Roll Cage ???

Those of you that know Geoff Dunkin would be aware that anything the man does, its done properly............... As a member of Dunkin Brothers Racing for over 12 years, one thing that has been drummed into my head is Safety comes first, check everything twice then get someone else to check it to be sure! Well this methodology has paid dividends. Phillip Island - Friday practice, our second session I stood on the second level observation platform watching #82 head down the main straight. As usual the car disappears for about 15 seconds then comes back into view. "Not this Time".

It turns out Geoff had a little excursion at around 140kph on the short straight between Southern loop and the sweeper into Honda. It appears something broke in the rear, thrusting the car to the in field. After striking an earth embankment, the car rolled at least 3 times suffering direct impact to the drivers door, front LHS pillar and rear RHS quarter panel. My first thought is obvious, is Geoff Ok?

Well he was, a small graze on the head from glass & one sore rib under the right arm, was the extent of it, not to mention lots of questions. Geoff walked away !!!!!!! Believe it or not we are pretty pleased with the outcome, our car was built with a well engineered cage incorporating 3 horizontal and 2 vertical intrusion bars in the drivers door.

The season looks like being over for #82. The team is currently looking at forward options.

My Question To You Is..........HOW GOOD'S YOUR ROLL CAGE ??????

Has been Run and Won
The kart day was a great success with 20 odd competitors turning up for a friendly social outing. Well that was the plan. By the end of the day we had 4 broken ribs, 1 broken collar bone and an ex president trying to re-break his neck by running head on into a wall at top speed, but other than that no sheep stations were on offer. It was commented afterwards that it wouldn't have mattered if it was shopping trolleys or ride on lawn mowers, the end result would have been the same. After some dodgy second race switcheroos with a certain current president taking on the alias of "Michelle" and commandeering her kart to show everyone what power to weight ratio means, the carnage, I mean racing began. Yellow flag etiquette was at its best with the usual hand up foot down technique being observed. The upshot after all the carnage was a bbq, a few lies told, apologies given and alcohol consumed. In the end, Cameron McKinnon was declared the winner, the rest of us declared losers. Friendly day out? Sure................"Thanks for the rundown Paul"

Sandown Round 1 2008 Been and Gone!

A great weekend of racing with fantastic results for Anthony Wallis, Steven Lloyd and Gary McKay. With Mr consistency John Zorkas just outside of the top 3. A disappointing end to the weekend for Neil Crow & Geoff Dunkin, both suffering diff related issues in their commodores. Crow was unable repair the vehicle to start race 4 & Dunkin's crew replaced the diff only to find a gearbox issue, finishing the race in first gear. Ruta finished 5th, Phil Dunkin had a good result starting from the rear of field twice to finish 6th, James Atkinson with a brand new car (hoping just to just finish) ended the weekend with a very consistent 7th followed by Tom Prentice, Cam McMinnon & Chris Massey rounding out the top 10.

Comment of the weekend - I'm not touching it!! It can stay on the trailer and go to Bathurst as is!! - Good work Gary.
